The true Backcountry Betty tells all!

Interview with Jennifer Worick, author of -Backcountry Betty: Crafting with Style-

Come to Jennifer's book signing held at our summer show August 1st and 2nd!

UCU-When did you discover your love for the combination of nature and design?

JW-WELL, I HAD WRITTEN BACKCOUNTRY BETTY: ROUGHING IT IN STYLE, WHICH IS A HANDBOOK ON HOW TO BE A GLAMAZON IN THE AMAZON. I’M ALSO A CRAFTER AND WRITE HOW-TO ARTICLES AND ABOUT THE CRAFT COMMUNITY FREQUENTLY, SO IT SEEMED A NATURAL THING TO WRITE BACKCOUNTRY BETTY: CRAFTING WITH STYLE. I WAS THRILLED TO LOOK AT NATURAL FOUND ITEMS IN A NEW WAY, INCORPORATING THEM INTO NEW AND ARTFUL CRAFT PROJECTS.

UCU-Give us some examples of nature related art featured in your book. Do you love to explore new medium?

JW-THERE’S PROJECTS FOR EVERY KIND OF CRAFTER: WHITTLE A STARFISH WITH DRIFTWOOD, WHIP UP A FIZZY BATH BOMB WITH DRIED HERBS, DRILL BEACH GLASS FOR A BRACELET OR MOBILE, SEW A DOG PARK PILLOW FOR THE BACKSEAT OF YOUR CAR WITH OLD TOWELS AND A PILLOWCASE, ADORN A T-SHIRT USING PAINT AND LEAVES AS YOUR STAMP. I LOVE TO LEARN A NEW TECHNIQUE. THIS WAS THE BOOK WHERE I LEARNED TO ROCK THE DREMEL TOOL.

UCU-Talk a little about your book. What was the inspiration behind it? Do you think you will write more in the future?

JW-I TALK ABOUT THE INSPIRATION IN THE FIRST QUESTION. I’LL DEFINITELY WRITE MORE BOOKS AND KEEP ON CRAFTING. I’M CURRENTLY FINISHING UP A BOOK OF SIMPLE GIFT PROJECTS, AGAIN USING INEXPENSIVE AND REPURPOSED MATERIALS TO CREATE GIFTS FOR MEN AND WOMEN, ADULTS AND KIDS. THIS IS THE BOOK WHERE I’M LEARNING TO LOVE THE TABLE SAW AND EMBROIDERY (BUT NOT ON THE SAME PROJECT).
